By decree of the Grand Council

Survived a Danish winter? Make it official.

The endless grey. The sideways rain. The sun clocking off at 15:30. Anyone who has endured it deserves a saga. Now you can bestow an Honorary Membership of the Danish Viking Association on a friend, a colleague or yourself, sealed in wax and ready to frame.

How the saga unfolds

Four small trials stand between your hero and eternal glory. None of them involve the sea in February. We checked.

  1. ᚠ

    Trial I

    Name thy hero

Carve in their name and choose their rank: Shieldmaiden, Viking, Jarl, or roll the rune dice for something grander, like Herring Whisperer of the Sideways Rain.

  2. ᚱ

    Trial II

    Chart the voyage

Tell the scribes which sunnier shore they sailed north from, or tick born Dane, and count the winters they have survived.

  3. ᛏ

    Trial III

    Recount the deed

Every saga needs a heroic deed. The icy swim. The bike ride through a horizontal hailstorm. The julefrokost and the morning after.

  4. ᛊ

    Trial IV

    Press the seal

Name a witness, stamp the official wax seal of the Association and carry home your certificate as a PDF, ready for the printer.

Begin the first trial

Who is worthy?

Anyone who has looked a Danish November in the eye and said: fine, I'll stay.

ᚱ

The Newcomer

Sailed north from sunnier shores and did not flee back south at the first sight of November darkness. Has learned to say hyggeligt with a straight face. Deserves a medal. We only have certificates.

ᛟ

The Born Dane

Born under the grey sky and raised on rugbrød. Has never owned an umbrella that survived October. Has endured it for a lifetime without complaint (well, with some complaint). Somebody should say thank you.

ᚷ

The Viking-Adjacent

Lives with an actual Viking. Survives the window left open all night, bike rides at minus five and a solemn “det går nok” about absolutely everything. Heroism of the very highest order.

The privileges of membership

Every honorary member is hereby entitled to:

  • The right to say “it's not cold, it's just fresh” with full authority.
  • Permission to bike through a horizontal hailstorm with the calm dignity of a warrior riding into battle.
  • The right to complain about the weather at any time, provided nothing is then done about it, as tradition demands.
  • One (1) invisible horned helmet. Historians insist Vikings never wore them. We've decided you earned one anyway.
  • Lifetime bragging rights at every julefrokost, birthday and Tuesday.
  • A certificate fit for the frame, the fridge door or the longhouse wall.
The official seal of the Association.
(Strictly speaking, a butter cookie tin lid. Press it.)

Words from the Grand Council

I personally sign every certificate. Well, by rune. Well, the computer does it. But I watch, and I weep with pride.
Ragnar Rugbrød the UnshavenGrand Jarl
I framed mine and hung it above the radiator. It is now the warmest thing in the house.
Helga Hyggelig the Slightly DampChief Winter-Bather
At last, recognition for cycling uphill against the wind. Both ways. Every day. Since 1987.
Bjørn BikelaneGuardian of the Bicycle Racks

The Grand Council is entirely fictional. Its opinions, sadly, are not.

Questions from the longhouse

What does it cost?

Nothing. Not a krone, not a herring, not even a rundstykke.

Is any of my data stored?

No. The certificate is crafted right there in your browser. Nothing is sent to us and nothing is saved. Close the tab and the scribes forget everything, as scribes do.

Can I print it?

Yes. You get an A4 landscape PDF, ready for any printer. Printed copies on thick parchment are coming soon. The scribes are sharpening their quills.

Is this an official Danish thing?

About as official as a butter cookie tin lid. The Danish Viking Association is a made-up society, founded for fun and for everyone who has ever cycled home in the rain.

Can I make one for myself?

Of course. No Viking has ever been shy about telling their own saga.

The longship leaves at dawn

Someone you know has survived the grey, the rain and the four o'clock sunset. Give them the honour the gods forgot to.
